I don’t even like orange.

There’s some nuance to my favorite color, depending who’s asking. My answer is grey (with an e—gray with an a is warm-toned, and you cannot convince me otherwise) but some people will playfully object that grey is a shade, not a color; in that case, my answer becomes a very dusty, washed-out sort of slate blue. If this hypothetical question-asker further objects that I’m just trying to recreate grey with a faint tinge of hue added as a technicality, which has happened, I’ll settle for pale purple or dark green.

Without nuance, though: My favorite color is decidedly not orange. The closest I’ll go is a dark gold, but even that is shaky.

So then why, you might ask, if you’re seeing this post before I get bored and change the theme again, would I give my website an orange-on-grey color scheme?

That’s a great question, and there’s probably an answer out there that has something to do with color theory and psychology, but the truth as far as I can tell it is that … well, I like how it looks. Tastes change; I’m not opposed to growing to like the color orange, but that’s not what’s going on here. I did the science to test it just now by looking at the orange straw that came with my iced coffee and thinking, Do I like that? The answer is no, and not just because I specifically told them I didn’t need a straw and they gave it to me anyway.

I’m at work right now (hence the Dunkin coffee) and struggling to focus on any of the things I ought to be doing (hence the new website theme). I thought that maybe if I sat down to write something new and whimsical about how I don’t like orange, I might recenter myself in a productive way and get back to it. Whimsy is now complete; we’ll see about the return to productivity.
